Steel is a central material in modern civil engineering. As a result of its use for the support structure it is regarded as irreplaceable, because a sophisticated steel structure forms the skeleton of civil engineering structures of all kinds. However, steel also has a disadvantage – it corrodes. On contact with oxygen and moisture, rust forms, which not only impairs the visual impression of steel structures, but also reduces the stability of the building over the course of time.
Modern corrosion protection is concerned with the coating of new structures but also with the preservation of existing structures which is becoming increasingly important for environmental reasons. From initial coating of construction materials threatened by corrosion intelligent concepts are required in the case of which the choice of system, application strategy and sensible maintenance intervals will extend the life cycle of a steel structure to its maximum.
